OBSERVING A CLASS WITH A PURPOSE

After observing the classes, comment on the use of a specific format.
Was it easier than the last time?
Were all the elements you wanted to observe reflected in the format?
Did it work like a check list or did you have to write a lot? Which do you prefer?

Comments must be send in by Monday the latest.
Have a great weekend !!!!!!!!!!

Regarding class observation I liked the format I chose, and I did find it useful.
The 18 points of the check list allowed me to observe and rate, both the teacher and the students performance; since it was ranked from 1 to 5 I was able to change my mind throughout the whole observation and I think the "points" I assigned do reflect what happened.
I wrote some commments, particularly about the teacher stategies and attitude but I didn't need to take so many extra notes.
Therefore, I believe a combination of a checklist with room to take notes is the type of observation format I prefer.

    1. I agree with you, Sophie. Combining the check list and writing extra comments provide us a better view of the class that is observed.

  2. While I was observing the class I felt quite comfortable using the checklist because it made me focus on the many ways the class should be developed. This format has different kind of points which a class needs to have, so it let me look at a variety of points of views which I sometimes forget to consider when we are teaching. I usually overrate classroom management and I do not see other aspects which are involved in class: The pacing of the lesson, carrying out comprehension checks or if there were cultural misunderstandings. In other words, those eighteen points that rate a class can provide me a better way to understand the phenomenon that is being developed in class so that I can have more reliable views of it. The only disadvantage that I found was the fact that there is no a section of comments which can be used to explain any details which need to be reflected.

  3. This last observation was completely different from the first one. The format that I chose was perfect for me, I really find it useful and it allowed me to keep the pace of the lesson while I rated both the teacher and students performance. And also I was able to write comments in order to remember why I rated that way, positive and room for improvement facts, attitudes, etc. In my opinion, it was an excellent option, I don't try to observe everything but there are facts inherent from the classroom observation that are difficult to split during an observation which reminded me that in our class we're going to reflect the integrated theory, knowledge, practice and experience acquire through all our lessons in the course.

  5. The observation was quite different from how I expected, make because I had the statements in my mind that Sofi and Fer gave. Acctually I saw that Alejandra is a teacher full of life and positiveness. Eventhough, she did have some problems with classroom management, some of the students were even not bein respectful with the teacher, that annoyed me with the students because Alejandra was giving some fun activities.
The only point that I actually didn´t like was that she answer in an inpolite way to one of the students that is a lawyer, and that her feedback was used by other of the students for making fun of him.
Thanks for your explanation about the blogg.

  6. Regarding the format that I used and comparing it with the checklist I created for the first observation. I prefered the checklist that I created because I have the chance to focus on the points that in my own criteria were the most important, 2 points in the other list were for me a little bit pointless. Eventhough, I did like the scale from 1 to 5 and as I did in the checklist I created I also took some extra notes.
